Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are wonderful, interesting, thoughtful humans. They are eager to engage in discussions about real and relevant topics, like race and class and systemic oppression. They are also eager to make a difference in the world around them.
Many of my students don't have access to very many books at home, and with many libraries currently closed, we need more diverse books for our English classes.
My students are hungry for books that matter to them!
My Project
Our current booklist for English class includes very few texts written by or about people of color, systemic racism, or current events. Especially now during the pandemic when students are working at home with a million and one distractions, reading Romeo and Juliet isn't going to cut it. We need engaging book choices, and we need to provide students with opportunities to discuss issues that matter, like race and class and systemic oppression.
We need to provide my students, 90% of whom are students of color, with representational book choices.
Trevor Noah's Born a Crime will keep them reading, discussing, laughing, and learning, even during this difficult time.
