My Project

Math is NOT a "universal language". In order to provide our newcomer learners math equity within the classroom, we need to have a wide variety of math manipulative tools, scaffolds, and determine the academic vocabulary that students will need to meet the language demands, and rigor of the math lesson.

The challenge to teaching math to multilingual learners lies not only in making math lessons comprehensible, but also ensuring that students have the language needed to understand and express their grasp of math concepts both orally and through written language.

The materials that I am requesting, will allow me to create a fun, meaningful, and equitable math environment in my multilingual classroom. These materials will allow me to provide & present a math professional development to my colleagues, supporting them with strategies, demonstrations, and techniques that can be used daily to support our multilingual learners in the General Education classroom.

All math manipulatives will be stored in student tackle boxes. At the start of of math lessons together, we will use the phrase, "Let's Tackle Math!" Each math lesson will be preceded by an academic vocabulary lesson. Math sentence frames will be introduced during the mini-lesson, and are crucial in serving a variety of purposes with multilingual learners. Sentence frames help to contextualize and bring meaning to vocabulary, they allow differentiated instruction, and they provide a structure for practicing, extending, and students' use of vocabulary in grammatically correct and complete sentences.

"We can do better. We trivialize their language-acclimation process when we expect them to keep up because “math is math.” Let’s give up talk of a “universal language.” The only universal language is the one we make by doing the hard work of communicating with each other." -Jay Wamsted
