Tackling Censorship and Racism with Celeste Ng's Dystopian Novel
Help me give my students Celeste Ng's compelling dystopian novel that challenges censorship and racism while championing the power of art and family solidarity to create change and persevere.
Our high school students are intrinsically motivated and altruistically minded and want to create positive change in our world. With the rise of anti-Asian hate crime in our country and beloved city, and with increased censorship hampering libraries and readers across the US, Celeste Ng’s NYT best-selling dystopian novel, “Our Missing Hearts,” will captivate my ninth-grade students.
Now more than ever, our students need access to stories that portray the power art has to challenge false narratives and prompt change.
Students want to read a diverse range of authors, and they want relevant books that help us examine our world and our responses to it.
This novel’s specific ending, thoughtful characters, and compelling subject matter lend themselves to creative assessments, such as fan fiction, research papers, and art as activism projects.
Also please note that this book still cannot be purchased another way besides here. Currently, neither the Shop DOE website nor the SORA app, carry class sets of this book.
