Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of my students come from low income households; many share their homes with other families to make ends meet. For example, some of my students share a living with other families or live in basements. They all qualify for free services such as free lunch. They deal with negative influences daily, such as gangs and violence. Unfortunately, this year a have 5 3rd graders that cannot read simple words such as was.
They are the sweetest students that I have had the pleasure to work with.
Many of them save their own earnings to buy me small dollar store gifts during holidays or draw me beautiful pictures to show their appreciation. They are more than happy to help each other and those that they see are in more need than themselves. I love them!
My Project
This year I have received a very challenging class. I have 5 students that need special education services, 4 students that cannot read simple words such as was, and many students that have very low self esteem. I need to find ways to encourage, motivate and raise their self esteem. I believe that having access to tablets during center activities will help me customize the students learning. I can find leveled books and videos so that they won't feel overwhelmed with the material. I can even use the tablets as part of the PE curriculum by showing them videos of various exercises and having the students do stations.
