This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I serve students with multiple severe disabilities. My students are eager to learn and love engaging with instructional technology. Unfortunately, our school does not have much. We log into GoMath, Khan Academy, Starfall, Scholastic, etc. Students are able to collaborate and take turns when using the SMART board. This technology enhances our learning. I hope to bring more technology into my classroom for my students to use. Teaching has a profound and lasting positive effect for a child’s future. I want to give them every opportunity.
My Project
I am teaching a math unit on financial literacy, opening a mock bank account and teaching about debits, credits and savings. We serve a high-needs population of students who have multiple, severe disabilities. This is traditionally not a subject taught in schools.
I would like to use tablets to access financial literacy apps such as Savings Spree, (an app that teaches financial literacy through a game show format) and Google Sheets to create spreadsheets of our planned budget.
In this STEM project, students will work in teams, starting off with a budget of $100 and decide how to spend their money each day over the course of a month. They will monitor the money they spend, what they spend it on and subtract each debit in a Google Sheet. They will also earn play money as they complete classroom tasks like helping clean up.
By incorporating tablets in this lesson, we will be able to engage students to get them excited about learning about financial literacy. The tablets will allow us to incorporate media and research we would otherwise not be able to obtain. We will create a digital project that we will be able to present on the SMART Board and share out. We will have a culminating event where we share out what we learned about financial literacy and how we spent our budgets
Many students come from homes that do not have access to tablets/computers. For this reason, it is essential to be able to provide a device for each student, so we can continue to learn and close the achievement gap. Collectively as a school, we are trying to put a device in the hands of each student, so we can research, learn and grow as an educational community!
