My students need Amazon Fire tablets in order to use computer-based programs that allow them to receive immediate reading intervention in topics and units they need support in.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The school I work in is considered a high-needs, low-income school with 85% of students receiving free or reduced lunch. Located in the East Village of Manhattan, New York, each student from my class comes from very diverse backgrounds. Our school is part of the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) services offered to students who need them. As educators, we know that students learn in many different ways, and it benefits them to learn visually. Unfortunately, our school cannot provide classrooms with all the supports and technologies needed in order for students to learn in a variety of different ways. The students in my class are some of the most hard-working children I have ever had the chance to meet. Many of them come from difficult backgrounds, where tools and technology are greatly limited.
My students are motivated to learn when given the opportunity to use technology tools, such as tablets.
Many of the homes in our school do not have access to common-place technology, such as computers or tablets. Providing students with the tools they need to succeed is my major goal for the school-year. Our school funding is limited, and we really appreciate all the support we can get!
My Project
In this generation, technology plays a major role in supporting student learning. Within the next few years, new technology will be invented in order to help students learn in a variety of different ways. It is my goal to create this type of environment in my classroom, where students can have the opportunity to expand their learning and knowledge using computer-based programs. In our school, we have one iPad cart that is passed around to those who need them. Often times, the tablet cart is taken at a time when it would benefit the students in my classroom. For programs that we use in the classroom to expand learning, such as Lexia and Myon, the amount of time students are able to sign-in to do their work is on a week-to-week basis.
Most of the students in my classroom do not have the resources at home to use these new pieces of innovative technology, and therefore must rely on receiving that intervention during school hours.
With tablets, my class will be able to use programs at their own leisure, in the comfort of the room they feel safest in, and where their teachers are able to sit with them one-to-one and offer them support and guidance. Giving low-income students the opportunity to receive the same amount of support as other students will greatly boost their learning, and overall engagement in their learning.
