My Students

We are the Michigan Wolverines. These wonderful 5 and 6 year old boys and girls know that in 2029 they will begin their journey to go to and through college. Their journey starts in kindergarten as they learn to think critically, explore their world, ask questions, and learn to be kind and caring citizens.

I teach kindergarten at a public charter school on the west side of Chicago where 97% of my students receive free or reduced rate lunch.

My students come to school each and every day ready to learn because they know that their zip code does not determine their destiny.

My Project

Kindergarten is where reading begins! My students love to read independently and a huge boost to their reading skills comes from knowing sight words - work that they see and don't have to sound out at all. Sight word knowledge comes from repetition!

There are hundreds of educational apps that focus on sight word knowledge and we want to take advantage of them so our students can be readers!

Each day, our students would be able to use the tablets to read sight words and therefore become confident and comfortable readers. When students are able to read books fluently, they can then focus more on comprehension and less on decoding. I want my students to love reading and making reading fun is a great way to do it!
