Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students with autism have 5 or more risk factors, such as coming from low income, single parent households, having multiple disabilities, and being minority students coming from homes where English is not the primary language. They lack access at home and school to technology to help them learn and complete assignments. The students are enthusiastic about learning and want to learn. Sometimes they have difficulties expressing themselves or asking for help or supplies, but when they have technology, they become engaged and express themselves to peers. The number of students has been increasing so right now half the class works independently with technology as I work with others. One more will brings us closer to a class set.

My Project

Technology will make a difference and help students to research future careers. I have a series of activities and lessons planned for students to narrow down career interests to utilize individual strengths to research, share and present what they learn. As my middle school students with autism begin thinking of college and career readiness skills that they will need to become the leaders of our future, we will focus on areas of interest, as well as, math and science fields. An additional tablet will give students more time to individualize learning and research possible careers. They will begin planning career choices and learning what courses are needed and what salaries are possible as they future plan. The tablet will be a tool in the classroom to complete papers and projects. We have tablets but not enough for each student and our tablets could use cases and more memory. In this technology literate world, any interaction with updated technology will increase their literacy as well as their desire to learn and use the new technology! Researching online decreases excessive use of hard copies and paper that take up space in our eco friendly world.
