Tablets As A Literacy Tool For Special Education

My Students

Want to make a big difference to the lives of these young students who are motivated to learn and become more interactive because they can now access the curriculum in their hands?

I have been teaching Special Education with severe Impairments for 15 years now.

My students are diverse special education high school students. They have moderate to severe impairement but they are a group of students who love to learn and improve their academic and functional skills. They are hardworking and have a lot of potential to be successful in meeting and coping with their special needs.

My Project

My students would love to have a handy technology they can manipulate right in their hands. So I used my own personal money to purchase 6 tablets to use in the classroom. We need another 3 tablets in our classroom. We would like to have for each student their own tablets to use during instructional time. The tablet applications will allow me to teach my students who have different functional academic levels because it has many uses, just fits right in meeting the diverse needs of my students. There are apps to increase vocabulary, sight words, and math facts, reading comprehension, and drawing skills. For my autistic students with poor fine-motor skills, the touchscreen design is easier to use than a desktop computer with a mouse or a laptop with a touchpad. It use to be a big dream to integrate technology in the classroom but now that we had started our literacy program with technology in our hands, we would like to see each students have the opportunity to use at the same time.

This device will really make a big difference and the students will be more motivated to learn because they can manipulate the device and can easily turn pages using the touchscreen.

The tablet will be a valuable tool for my students in the classroom. Thank you for this opportunity to support us and to help our students learn to the best of their potentials. Thank you for this opportunity so we can serve our SPED students better and bring out their best potentials despite of their impairments.
