This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students need to train for adult life the same way that professional athletes train for championship games: hard work, dedication, and a growth mindset. By the same token, though, they should take joy and pride in that training, and it is my job to give them that opportunity.

The first thing my students hear each day is, "Welcome, come on in and get logged in.

We've got a lot of work to do!" Their work is to learn, and they just need the tools. They always do the rest. Most come from families experiencing poverty, and about half of them are first-generation immigrants. Many have come from refugee camps and have seen violence in their homelands. Almost two-thirds of them are or were English language learners. At home, they are hearing Somali, Spanish, Vietnamese, Laotian, Cambodian, Ethiopian, Arabic, and other languages, in addition to English. This may sound like a recipe for chaos and disharmony, but they mix and mingle freely, finding friendship across boundaries of language, skin color, and religion. What strikes me most about these students is how many of them are so eager to learn and reach for a better life for themselves and their families.

My Project

Help our school launch a gaming club! We've already got a dizzying array of word games like Scrabble, Apples to Apples, and Taboo that we use in the classroom. The students have plenty of card games to bring in (including a literary card game we've developed ourselves!). We have the old staples like chess. What we don't have is a budget for the expensive gaming books needed to run tabletop roleplaying games.

I have students begging me to let them play games in class, and nearly all of the current research on the teenage brain tells us that they learn best through social play, using cooperative imaginative games (NO PHONES, NO SCREENS!) We're launching a gaming club so that the kids have a safe space to spend Friday afternoons having fun learning, instead of ending up in bad situations in the neighborhood.

We'll use these materials to help the kids develop confidence, empathy, leadership, and their imaginations, and at the same time reinforce academic content like arithmetic and statistics, ecology, elements of narrative, and social justice (done through collaborative storytelling).

They need enough rule books to go around the table and a set for the referee (an added bonus is that it gets them to read very large books with complicated vocabulary). The Hexor play mats and wet-erase markers help them visualize the setting and provide a reason for painting their own miniature figures, and even sculpting "dungeon dressing" props. Of course, the dice provide the randomness and uncertainty in the story resolution, creating dramatic tension.

As a veteran teacher, longtime hobby gamer, and professional game designer, I've seen the gaming hobby help transform awkward, shy, and academically unengaged youngsters into confident, outgoing, and successful adults. Please help me bring this life-changing experience to the future leaders of our neighborhood!
