Tables for Small Group Time

My students need age appropriate tables in our Pre-K classroom. Our classroom tables are used for work, play, and meals and they are too small.

My Students

I teach in an urban school in Northern, New Jersey. My students are in an inclusion classroom with special needs. They also live in a lower socioeconomic area. I love to give the children every opportunity to learn. The children are eager learners and love to try anything that is new and exciting. We work hard in Pre-K to learn the basics of reading, writing and math.

My class is made up of fifteen children, who are absolutely amazing.

They are from various backgrounds such as Puerto Rico, Philippines, Peru, India, and Trinidad. They teach me something about themselves and about me every day. I feel lucky to spend my day teaching them what it is like to have fun learning and to motivate them to keep on learning in everything they do. I think it's great for them to keep on questioning me and all the adults and other children in their life, and to broaden their outlooks and expectations of school and life.

My Project

My students are in need of age appropriate furniture in our Pre-K classroom. Our classroom tables are used for work, play, and meals. Currently, my students help to arrange the tables daily for small group time, and rearrange them once again for lunch time.Small group time is an integral part of our daily routine, where students participate with their teacher in carefully planned, open ended, often messy activities, where personal space is critical. The tables we have do not allow for children to sit with materials comfortably. Our activities are often limited to the table space we have available. These small tables don't fit the students! Often, children will choose to sit on the carpet with materials, rather than in the chairs we have.

My students will enjoy a wider range of activities, and smooth transition times with age appropriate furniture.
