Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember being an awkward ninth grader? An individualist teen? Our self portrait unit deals with self image, cultural background and current notions of beauty. Our challenge is to paint ourselves and learn about ourselves!
My students come from low income families, most are English learners, low income and new immigrants.
They are very creative but they also carry a lot of trauma because of the gang impacted neighborhoods where they live.
These students will be the first in their families to go to college.
Our little charter school has had an art program for just one year and we lack basic materials. We are slowly building a set of basics so that they can be used year after year.
My Project
My students need 12 unprimed canvas, 16 tabletop easels and 15 double sided mirrors for self portraits and future projects. The table easels will not only be used for helping us draw and paint but they will also be used for exhibition nights, fundraising and art shows.
The mirrors will be used to look at facial proportions and the unprimed canvas will be used to learn how to stretch and prime it.
Self portraiture is an important aspect of visual arts.
Our art budget is tiny and we try to use recycled materials as much as we can. However there are some basic materials that I can not find at our re-use center or Goodwill.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
