My Project
Given the limitations of our available resources, our current collection of novels predominantly consists of canonical works authored by white men. However, we recognize the importance of diversifying our students' literary experiences. Therefore, we are excited to introduce Tayari Jones's acclaimed novel, "An American Marriage," into our curriculum. Through exploring the complexities of relationships, identity, and justice within the novel, students will gain valuable insights into themes that resonate with contemporary society.
In addition to studying the novel's themes and stylistic elements, students will undertake a comprehensive analysis through the creation of an Advanced Placement (AP) essay.
This essay will delve into Jones's nuanced portrayal of relationships, providing students with an opportunity to sharpen their analytical skills and engage deeply with the text.
Furthermore, students will embark on a creative journey by conducting interviews with family members to gather personal narratives. Drawing inspiration from these stories, they will craft original short stories that reflect their own perspectives and experiences. This process not only nurtures their creative abilities but also fosters empathy and understanding as they explore diverse viewpoints.
The culmination of this project will be a public sharing event, where students will have the opportunity to showcase their short stories. This experience not only celebrates their creativity but also provides them with a taste of the authentic authorial experience, instilling confidence and pride in their work. Through this multifaceted approach, students will not only deepen their understanding of literature but also cultivate valuable skills that extend beyond the classroom.
