This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our middle school is a Title I school with over 80% of its students having free or reduced-price lunch. Our district made national news headlines due to the immense damage that we incurred during Hurricane Harvey. However, not only was our campus damaged, but also a large number of our students homes also were destroyed. Despite all of the hardship that our students are going through, you would never be able to tell when they come to school. They truly love to learn, and they love their time at school. Our students are smart, hard-working, and eager to learn.
My Project
Despite the fact that our school and community were negatively impacted by Hurricane Harvey, amazing things are still happening in our classroom. I am the AVID Elective Teacher and Site Coordinator on my campus. I work in two capacities: I help get my students ready to be successful in college and future careers, and I help train teachers to do the same with students throughout our campus.
Swivl is a robotic mount that we can use in conjunction with an iPad that can single-handledly revolutionize the way my school goes about teaching teachers best practices that lead to student engagement and success.
I plan to use the Swivl in two ways: for professional development and with my students for classroom assignments/video projects.
One of the biggest disconnects in professional development for teachers is seeing the strategies that are being taught in real classroom settings. Often, when you try to video tape students, they can be a bit awkward. Swivl makes videoing easy with the use of "markers". These markers have microphones in them so that you can hear what it being said throughout the room. When a marker is activated, it signals the robotic swivel to turn toward the speaker. There is no need for a camera man and the movement is smooth. With Swivl, I can show teachers high-quality video of strategies being taught to real students. Then, those teachers can bring the strategies back to their classrooms.
Also, the Swivl will allow students to easily do classroom video projects. I can video tape current students talking about the things that we have learned in class to use for years to come. They can use the Swivl while conducting interviews. Also, I can also use these videos to show parents at parent event.
