My Project
I am requesting funding to purchase AAC switches and switch-adapted toys to increase play and learning opportunities for my students with severe multiple impairments. Many of my students face significant physical and communication challenges that limit their ability to interact independently with their environment. By incorporating adaptive switches, I can modify toys and classroom materials, allowing students to participate in meaningful, engaging and developmentally appropriate activities.
Play is a critical component of cognitive, social and emotional development.
For students with severe multiple impairments, traditional toys and learning tools are often inaccessible due to physical and communication barriers. Currently, our students has limited access to adaptive equipment, which restricts our students' opportunities for independently play, cause-and-effect learning, and social engagement.
AAC switches are essential tools that can be used to modify battery-operated toys and devices, enabling students to activate them with a simple press or touch. This not only promotes independent play but also encourages communication, motor skill development and social interaction. The ability to control a toy or activity provides our students with a sense of autonomy and empowerment that is often difficulty to achieve through conventional means.
