My Students
I am lucky enough to teach an amazing group of middle school students in a self-contained autistic support classroom. My students are in grades 6th through 8th and are all diagnosed with autism as well as other disabilities. They come from very diverse backgrounds and all live in an inner-city neighborhood in Philadelphia and attend a Title I school in which all students receive free lunch.
My students work hard to overcome many educational, social and personal challenges daily.
Beyond academic instruction, my students require direct, explicit instruction on how to interact with others on a daily basis. They succeed with direct, specialized instruction tailored to their individual needs. Although teaching students on the spectrum can be challenging at times, I would not want to learn and grow daily with any other group of students.
My Project
Often, our students do not have the opportunity to make connections in the community and participate in meaningful trips. A trip to the Camden Adventure Aquarium would compliment our science unit while giving our children a chance to have a hands-on experience. Additionally, they can interact with other students and aquarium staff to enhance the social skills they’ve been learning in the school environment.
This trip will not only provide academic enrichment, but it will also have a positive impact on my students’ ability to relate to the community around them in and out of school.
Students with Autism benefit from practicing their new skills in a variety of settings to increase their independence. I know this trip will afford my students opportunities to continue to develop their social and academic skills. In school, we’ve fundraised the admission costs for the students. Funding for this project would cover the cost of the school bus.
