Swerving Into Robotics

My Project

In an already impoverished district, finding the funds necessary to run a classroom is hard to do. When you decide to prepare students for a "millennial" life outside of the classroom by implementing new classes that require vast amounts of funding and supplies? Almost impossible.

Our FIRST Robotics Team, Mechanical Mettle, of twelve students is the only one of its kind in our region.

Together, they have designed, built, and programmed a functioning robot . During the last seven years, our robot team has evolved from a rookie team not knowing what to expect to a team that is ready to take the next steps in upgrading our robot.

Every attempt at creating a robot is a learning experience. I see engagement and excitement from otherwise silent students. I see the gears turning inside struggling students' brains as they learned how to code and program a robot. Students that are not excited about school suddenly have a reason to show up in the mornings. Our robots might make the affluent schools laugh when we show up to compete has sparked a new sense of responsibility in a group of poverty-stricken students. We are working to develop a robot that is top of the line.

To take the next step with our robot, we need to upgrade our drive train. We are using an outdated tank drive. With tank drive the range of motion is limited and tedious. With this project, we will upgrade our drive train to swerve drive, which will allow the robot to move quickly and easily in any direction. In an ever-advancing society that is focused on Science and Technology, I want to help prepare my students for both the work-force and college through the continuation of the Mechanical Mettle robotics team.
