Sustainability, Science, and Nutrition in Our Secret Garden

My students need a classroom garden. They need gardening tools, pots, kneeling pads, soil, and raised beds to plant vegetables and learn about taking care of a garden.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Elliott's classroom raised $594

My Students

A garden in the cement, beauty on the asphalt. My students would love the easy access of a garden right outside of our classroom to care for, enjoy and watch grow. They will learn the beginnings of sustainability and how to care for what is green around them as I teach for the planet!

Our school is a small public school that was just awarded the California Distinguished Award for our partnership with the community and implementing good intervention strategies to help those students in need.

We have many students from many different countries around the world, with varied life experiences. Being small is an advantage, in which all the students know each other well, work together and take care of each other. Parents help in the classroom and the community spirit flourishes. Students share with one another and teach each other. It is a secret place that needs a secret garden.

My Project

My students will be learn how to work a small garden. Using the soil, tools, knee pads, pots and above ground garden area, they will grow food, care for the plants, learn about various vegetables and how to care for them. My students will learn about the garden ecosystem and what animals hurt and help their plants. We will also plant a monarch habitat and learn about the life cycle of this beautiful butterfly. This garden will teach them about sustainability, science, health, cooperation, and responsibility. They will also be able to sit and enjoy the garden as it will be right outside our classroom door on the new bench I have requested. To work and learn in a green environment will invigorate them and teach them.

This secret garden will teach my students so many amazing concepts.

They will plant and grow food to eat, learn about plant life and the animals that sustain it. They will watch monarchs lay eggs and hatch from their chrysalises. They will be able to sit and read and discuss literature in their secret garden set between buildings.
