Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

“The city of Galveston, Texas, was booming. Perched on an island off the southern coast of Texas, Galveston had been founded in the 1830s. By 1900, it was Texas's richest and most important city . . . True, this glittering city was prone to flooding. But just a few years before, a weather forecaster had said the idea of a hurricane striking Galveston was absurd . . .

So when a storm started brewing on September 8, 1900, no one believed it would be any worse than previous storms.” (from the synopsis of I Survived the Galveston Hurricane, 1900 by Lauren Tarshis)

With these book sets, my students will grapple with the challenges that people faced during historic events, build empathy and understanding for others’ lived experiences, and make connections across time and place.

During this unit, students will read fiction and nonfiction accounts of historical events, synthesizing information across multiple texts, exploring character traits, and identifying recurring themes.

My students want to explore big ideas and make the world a better place. During this unit, we will look to the past to better understand how people navigate and persevere through difficult situations. With this knowledge, we are taking small steps towards building a better future.
