My Students

"I have never let my schooling interfere with my education" once said by Mark Twain, may be a joke but is also a reality that often happens. Many students have trouble functioning in a school environment and need some help before it impacts their education.

My classroom is full of a rambunctious group of 24 kindergartners.

Many of them have never been to school before and had little preparation for the classroom. Our school is in a low income neighborhood with very little funding or involvement from the community and school board due to tough economic times. We are greatly lacking many needed resources, even the basics.

My Project

Every year I see more and more students enter my classroom that need special materials to help them adapt to the environment, especially when they are at the kindergarten age. I have students who have trouble with fine motor skills, are affected by ADD/ADHD or have sensory disorders. Simple tools that wrap around their wrist and help them hold a pencil, a weighted turtle pillow to put on their laps will help them stay in their chair, or a foam pillow helps them sit quietly without bopping around would allow the students to focus more on their education. They would be able to listen during circle time when using the sensory fidgets (balls they can squish or an object they can twist) instead of hunting around the carpet for a piece of trash to play with. Students could also sit in their chair and complete an assignment when given a band around the chair to push their legs against or headphones that cover their ears from all classroom noise.

These donations will make a difference with students with special needs, allowing them to focus during school instead of losing time to inabilities.

Some of these items may seems a bit strange but they have a huge impact on students who need them. Not only will students be able to focus and learn, but it will also build their confidence when they feel successful about completing work and participating with the rest of the class fully.
