Surviving Harvey via Science Escapes!

My students need materials that are already prepared to provide quick access and transition from one class to the next. This cuts down on loss time due the overlapping of classes.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my school represent a struggling economic community. The majority of the students are on free or reduced price lunch. The school is home to multiple generations of students within families. Those students continue to enroll their own children with us. This represents an atmosphere of caring and family that is nurtured at our school.

Many of these students are unable to afford the necessary materials needed for supplies to make attending school all it should be.

The students at our school are energetic, inquisitive, and eager to succeed. Our goal is to give them every opportunity.

My Project

My school is located in a area where students look forward to activities at school to fill a void elsewhere. Our school strives to provide rich experiences to an economically disadvantaged population.

Science materials are scarce at our school.

The teachers tend to have to spend their own money to provide additional resources to make learning fun.

Science opens their eyes to the world. The materials I have requested will make the school science lab a place where students know they are in for a treat of good learning through multiple modes, every time they enter the lab! Having these materials in ready made kits and folder games, makes things more accessible. These materials will allow me to set up multiple investigation stations per class period. The materials may be used for multiple grade levels as well. This is especially good for me as a science lab teacher because I service grades PK and 1st through 5th. During the Kindergarten period I assist in the fifth grade science class. These folder games, kits and additional materials make it easy for me to carry with me to the 5th grade class for small group sessions. I love to make science fun! These brand new materials will be a breath of sunshine for our students who struggled and suffered losses during the terrible Hurricane Harvey. Many lives were put on hold as we went through this weather event. The late start to school has affected many in different ways. My goal is to use the science lab as a retreat and distraction from the devastation we continue to overcome here in Houston, Texas. More materials will ensure all students a chance to have a hands on approach to science in a very fun way, everyday!!!
