My students need copies of The Martian (student edition) to frame our inquiry engineering projects throughout the year.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Hill's classroom raised $634

My Students
My students are unique in that they are all TAG - Talented and Gifted - which means that they have scored at the 97th percentile or above on a standardized test of intelligence or achievement.
Worksheets aren't enough!
These students need challenges and chances to go deep into inquiry in a subject, and then the opportunities to express their learning in a variety of ways.
They need challenges and enrichment that our rural, impoverished community can't always provide. These students have the capabilities and the gifts to become wildly successful human beings - but only if we support them.
My Project
My students will be reading The Martian (student version), and as we follow the trials of Mark Watney, we will be learning and fully participating in the engineering design process.
Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve.
This is what engineers do in "real life," and it is how we will be planning our science activities throughout the year. Instead of teacher-directed activities that have a single correct solution, we will use The Martian to create engineering challenges and themes in which our students will have to use their knowledge and creativity to create possible solutions. Collaboration in small groups and learning from each other will be key.
In addition to connecting our engineering challenges to literature, we will also work on our scientific writing skills by recording data carefully, sketching plans for designs, and writing reflections on our products.
More than half of students from low‑income households
