Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“I am not a teacher, but an awakener.” ― Robert Frost Every morning I remind myself that the main goal of my craft is not to teach but to make students understand and value different cultures and languages.

My students are excellent, the computer I have in my classroom is not.

My students are conscientious and try their best every class. My class, however, lacks some of the main things that not only a teacher needs but more importantly what a student needs. One of the key things that any student needs in a world language class is a device that can reproduce videos and culturally relevant material (and be able to listen to it). One of the key things that any student needs is access to the Internet to be able to use different online resources. This frustration is especially felt during students' presentations when students need to present in front of the class and the desktop computer does not even have an updated version of powerpoint.

My Project

We need a new computer to project presentations and play listening activities through speakers. The students have used the teacher's desktop but in the past weeks this computer has begun to show its age (it is almost 10 years old). Our school does not have many computers for the students to access in the library and these are often booked weeks in advance. Thus, during study sessions the students have become reliant on using the desktop in my room. As already stated, this computer is not very reliable, and the students have told me that it would be great if we could have a student laptop in the classroom. (The teacher's desktop is normally for teachers but I allow them to use it as I know how important it is for them to have access to the Internet). We also need speakers and the wiring to connect them to the computer to do listening activities during Spanish class.

My students would deeply appreciate a replacement computer, speakers, and wiring, because it will allow access to online resources that not only can help sparking their interest for a world language but to create a more diversified offering of authentic materials.

I am sure this focus will also promote a better understanding of different cultures.
