My Students
My students are your prototypical middle school students. They love to learn (even if they won't admit to it), and they love to have fun (even when they are not supposed to). My students love to learn about the world and are consistently seeking to expand their horizons beyond the four walls of our classroom and the confines of our school. They love to learn and are constantly asking questions about the world around them.
More than 40% of the students at our school come from low-income households.
A further 11% of students are classified as English Language Learners. Nearly 44% of the school identifies as persons of color. Overall the students from our school are a very diverse crowd representative of the neighborhoods in which they come from. Our school serves over 1,500 students who are eager to learn about new and exciting perspectives.
My Project
Today's youth are increasingly more diverse. Society as a whole continues to move towards a more and more diverse and accepting mode. Schools, while being bastions of learning, are slow to upgrade their materials to help support this diversity. Many students will fail to have access to books whose characters represent their lives. They will go throughout their school years without the joy of reading about people who look like them, talk like them, love like them, and have the same problems and issues as they do.
It is not enough for teachers to support diversity, the materials students have access to must also be diverse.
My goal is to help students not only find books that they love, but to find inspiration in the characters and situations found in these books. Students deserve a place that recognizes the humanity within all of us. It should be the world around us, but until it is my classroom will be one place they can go where they will be recognized.
