My students come from a low-income/high poverty area and are very diverse, both in race and socioeconomic status. One hundred percent of our students receive free lunch and breakfast. Many have experienced trauma and have some tough home lives, but that doesn't bring them down. They come to school everyday and are very eager to learn.
Even with all their struggles, my students work very hard and take great pride when they accomplish a tough lesson.
They are enthusiastic about learning and excited to explore new learning opportunities everyday!
My Project
As we prepare to go back to school in the fall, there are a lot of uncertainties about what our school day might look like. It is possible that we will return to the classroom full-time, but it is also likely that we might experience a hybrid blend of in-person and distance learning.
In order to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 and other viruses that could make students ill, we will need to be more intentional than ever about social distancing and about making sure students have their own sets of supplies.
In a traditional classroom setup, supplies are often shared among small groups of students or even the whole class. However, this will not be possible this year. Because of concerns with COVID-19, students will each need to keep their own sets of supplies with them. To help make this possible, I would like to create 'supply kits' for every scholar. The materials in this project will be combined with existing supplies to create these kits. The binders will be used to hold loose leaf paper, math curriculum, and other materials, and will ensure that these papers stay safe and organized when transitioning between home and school. The dry erase lap boards will be a great tool to get instant feedback from students during our Google Meet online classes, or during small groups when we can have in-person learning. The pencil sharpeners will go inside their pencil pouches to ensure that students always have access to a sharp pencil, at home and at school.
Though this year will look very different from years past, I am committed to making sure my scholars have everything they need to be successful. Thank you for your support!
