My Project
My students are middle schoolers in a self-contained special education classroom in Queens, NY, who face unique learning challenges every day. They are bright, creative, and capable—but often require different tools and environments to help them reach their full potential. One of the most impactful changes I can make for them is creating a classroom space that supports their individual sensory, emotional, and attention needs. That’s where flexible seating comes in.
Many of my students have diagnoses such as autism, ADHD, or sensory processing disorders.
For them, sitting still in a traditional desk for long periods is not only difficult—it can be a barrier to learning. When students are uncomfortable or unable to move in ways that regulate their bodies, they’re more likely to shut down, act out, or disengage.
Flexible seating options—such as wobble stools, floor cushions, bean bags, or standing desks—give students choice and control over their learning environment. These tools help them focus, reduce anxiety, and feel empowered in the classroom. They promote movement, support sensory needs, and help me build a space that is inclusive and respectful of their individual differences.
This project is about equity. My students deserve the same opportunities as their peers in general education to feel comfortable, supported, and ready to learn. With your help, I can transform our classroom into a place that meets their needs—not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well.
Thank you for supporting my incredible students and helping me build a classroom where everyone can succeed.
