This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach high school English, and many of the students in my class are English Language learners who need good examples and models to build their understanding of our learning objectives, as well as to connect with teachers and other students.
The past year and a half has been challenging for all students but has created specific challenges for students' social and emotional well-being, especially for those who are learning the English language.
Communicating effectively is imperative for all students, and situations arising from transitioning from distance learning, hybrid learning, and exclusions have made it difficult for students to re-engage in school, especially for those who are learning English.
My Project
Hybrid and distance learning, has caused many students to struggle with isolation and disenfranchisement. And English Language Learners have struggled with language acquisition on top of that.
Many students are struggling to reconnect and communicate with their teachers and peers, as well as integrate back into regular educational routines as they transition from distance and hybrid learning.
A laptop will open a channel for communication more effectively as it will work with a document arm to model and demonstrate crucial skills, such as annotating a text, modeling sentence structure, editing, and proofreading skills, as right now, I have no way to connect the document arm to the display for students to see. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to the task, purpose, and audience. This is a tremendous hurdle, especially when trying to communicate with English Language Learners, a population of students who have already demonstrated a learning deficit due to distance and hybrid learning.
Notebooks are a place for student journal entries, notes, summaries for their independent reading, and as a means of communication. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.10 Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences. With the trauma of disenfranchisement that distance and hybrid learning has caused, having a place and space to put those feelings into words allows students to process and reflect on their experiences.
Having a class library with high interest books draws students in to reading. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.10 By the end of grade 9, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 9-10 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
