Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I’m a school social worker at an alternative high school and credit recovery center, where I support students who are at especially high risk of not graduating. Many of them face challenges outside the classroom—such as unstable housing, trauma, mental health struggles, and a lack of basic resources—that deeply impact their ability to stay focused and engaged in school.
At our campus, we focus not only on academics, but also on healing, connection, and resilience.
That’s where social-emotional learning (SEL) comes in.
The items on this list are specifically chosen to help students build essential SEL skills—like emotional regulation, stress management, self-awareness, and healthy communication. These tools help create a safe, supportive space where students can feel heard, valued, and ready to learn.
I work with students one-on-one and in small groups to provide counseling, teach coping strategies, and help them access the resources they need to thrive both in and out of school. With your support, we can continue this vital work and offer students the tools they need to succeed—not just academically, but emotionally and socially too.
