Supporting Sensory Needs in a Special Ed Classroom
Help me give my students sensory floor tiles, a weighted stuffed animal, inflatable yoga ball chairs, a mindfulness breathing light, and rocking chair to start the new school year in a classroom designed just for their unique needs.
This coming school year, I'll be welcoming a class of extraordinary primary learners in a self-contained, special education setting. My students will have varying exceptionalities, and while I haven't met them yet, I know they'll each bring their own unique strengths, challenges, and incredible potential. What they all deserve is a classroom that feels safe, calming, and designed with their specific needs in mind.
The goal of this project is to create that kind of environment--a space where my students can thrive emotionally, socially, and academically.
Many of them will experience sensory sensitivities, difficulties with focus, or anxiety in new situations. That's why I've carefully chosen items that will support them in ways that matter deeply.
The liquid sensory tiles will provide a visually calming and engaging surface to help ground students when they feel overstimulated. The weighted stuffed animal offers soothing pressure to ease anxiety and support emotional regulation. The mindfulness breathing light will be a gentle visual aid for practicing calming strategies, helping students learn to slow their breathing and self-regulate throughout the day.
For their physical comfort and movement needs, the flexible seating cushions will allow students to wiggle and sit in ways that feel best for their bodies-- supporting focus and engagement during learning time. And the cozy rocking chair will a comforting options for moments of calm, story time, or quiet breaks.
What makes my students special is not just their needs--it's their incredible resilience, their big hearts, and the way they teach us to see the world with more empathy, patience, and creativity. With your support, I can offer them a space where they feel understood, valued, and supported from day one. This project is about so much more than classroom supplies--it's about helping little learners feel safe, confident, and ready to shine.
