As a middle school teacher in the City of Poughkeepsie, funding is hard to come by. We are a Title I school where all of our students qualify to receive free breakfast and lunch. I have a diverse population of students in my classes. I teach eighth grade science and math and seventh grade math in self-contained classrooms.
My goal is to bring a sensory friendly environment into our classroom to enable my students' success.
Due to the varied disabilities my students have, allowing them the opportunity to work in an environment that focuses on the whole child, would support their learning tremendously.
Having a sensory friendly environment with a rug, lamps and floor cushions will allow my students to take charge of their learning and make choices that work best for them. Currently, my students are sitting at traditional desks with traditional florescent lighting. With sensory friendly options my students will be able to choose a space in the classroom that works for them. Having sensory friendly options will allow my students to be more engaged in their classwork and less disruptive to their peers, allowing them to take ownership of their learning.
The following products selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The comfy floor seats will allow students to sit at desk/tables but will still allow movement. The carpet will allow for additional comfortable floor seating options. The lamps will provide sensory friendly lighting to our classroom which will make for a calm, tranquil environment. The headphones will be used to allow them to tune out the noise around them when they feel overwhelmed.
I have seen firsthand how choice can positively affect students' work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow and continue our love of learning!
