Supporting Second Grade SEL (Social Emotional Learning)

Help me give my students a supporting SEL (Social Emotional Learning) classroom environment. These books, and other comforting classroom items, will provide them with a guide to understanding themselves and how to better relate to others meaningfully.

My Project

It is my mission to provide my students with a safe, comfortable, and friendly learning environment that nurtures not only their academic growth but their emotional well-being as well. Many of my students come from low socio-economic backgrounds and have experienced neglect, abandonment, and inconsistency in their lives. Despite these challenges, they show up each day with open hearts and a desire to be seen, heard, and supported.

The resources I’ve selected are carefully chosen to help build a classroom where students can learn to understand and manage their emotions, communicate effectively with others, and work collaboratively.

The books included are powerful tools for sparking meaningful conversations, engaging in role-modeling exercises, and helping students develop positive social habits. These stories serve as relatable entry points to explore topics like empathy, kindness, self-regulation, and perseverance.

In addition to books, items such as the classroom calendar and schedule planner play a vital role in creating a reliably structured day for students. Many of them find comfort in knowing what to expect next. Predictability and routine give them a sense of control and security, something that is often lacking in other areas of their lives. By consistently showing up for them with structure, compassion, and opportunities for personal growth, I hope to help them build the confidence and skills they need to thrive both in and out of the classroom.

These resources (cushions, posters, timer, erasers, sign language letters) are more than classroom tools, they are the building blocks of a safe and supportive space where my students can grow into thoughtful, capable, and compassionate individuals.
