Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school in Salt Lake City, UT where 97% of our students qualify for free & reduced lunch. Over 75% of my students are English Language Learners. These years languages spoken in my students' homes included Spanish, Burmese, Hakha Chin, Mele, Tongan, Swahili, Somali, and Navajo. Some of my students' families have been in the U.S. for generations, while others are newly arrived immigrant and refugee families from all over the world. For the past two years, I have taught in one of the school district's inclusion classrooms. This means that the focus is on inclusion for students of all different ability levels and learning needs (both special, general, and English language education) in a setting that meets those needs on a unique, individual basis.
Despite some obvious differences, ALL of my students have a love for learning and an innate sense of compassion and empathy.
I am blown away daily by their ability to show up over and over with the same enthusiasm for learning and inquisitive nature towards life. I am also transformed by their kindness and concern for not only those in the classroom community but the greater world.
My Project
I am looping up to fourth grade with my students. I have been doing lower grades so I need to supplement my library with books that support my students' growing interests and literacy levels. These books will help them stay engaged while continuing to be challenged by what they read in their free time! Some of my students had just become interested in some of these series towards the end of last school year and I would love to surprise them by having our very own sets in the classroom this fall!
