This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are amazing. The population of our school is a healthy mix of immigrant families from over 50 countries and military families serving all over the world. Constant movement, among various other situations, can be deeply traumatic, and this can hinder students' growth and success.
When there is trauma, the brain naturally focuses on it more than things perceived (by the brain) as less important; unfortunately, this can include academics.
This often leads to increased behaviors and lower academic growth.
Studies have shown that incorporating different sensory experiences, which reach different areas of the brain, helps students to come back to a regulated brain state, which then leads to a better focus on learning all the important things we do in school.
My goal is to create a space that helps my students feel safe and to help them learn how to calm themselves in the intense moments. These are skills they can take with them and use outside of the classroom! I want to give my students skills they can carry with them and use to become well-rounded humans as they continue to learn and grow. Supporting my classroom will help this goal!
