This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students will be competing specifically in volleyball and soccer. The team is part of a small alternative public school located in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood. The majority of students come from immigrant families. Students go to school year-round in order to graduate early and stay safe during the summer months. Students in the athletic program learn leadership skills that they apply in the classroom. It is also a motivation to keep their grades strong, come to school on-time, and complete their school work.

Our soccer/ volleyball players develop a strong community of support and leadership that shows in their athletic and academic accomplishments.

They use the athletic community as an alternative to hanging out on the streets and becoming involved in drugs and gangs. Those who participate have higher GPAs, lower truancy issues and higher graduation rates. Athletics has become a direct pipeline to colleges. Through athletic scholarships, many have been given a chance to not only attend, but also graduate from 4 year universities. Our family is so strong that we even have several alums who return to coach our current students.

My Project

With a small school comes a small athletics' budget. We have always used the least expensive products possible which has led to fast turn-over and the inability to provide game day equipment (we currently borrow from other teams). After this last season, we are down to only 1 usable soccer ball, 3 volleyballs and no volleyball knee pads. None of this equipment matches IHSA standards.

The items on this list will allow our athletes to access the equipment needed to have successful practices and pride in their team/ school.

The volleyball pads will be shared and passed down year to year. Currently, our players play without them and do not dive for balls out of fear of injury.
