FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Z.'s classroom raised $269

Whenever I am able to obtain new independent reading books for my ninth graders, I find myself with a (good) problem on my hands. As soon as they notice that I have a stack of fresh books on my desk, the ruckus begins. "I want that one!" "You can't have it, it's mine!" I should have this problem every day, I say to myself, delighted by their enthusiasm. Research shows that the more that students of any age read books on their level, the more skilled they become as readers. It is my primary mission as the literacy coach and as an English teacher at George Westinghouse High School in Brooklyn, NY, to get as many books into as many hands as I can. Currently about 70% of the students at George Westinghouse High School in Brooklyn, NY qualify for a free lunch, and in September 2005 an equal percentage entered ninth grade reading below grade level. Ninth grade English class meets for two periods per day. One-quarter of the grade students receive is derived from their work as independent readers in class and at home. While a number of students look for their own books at the library and in bookstores, most rely on the classroom library to provide them with their next read. A steady supply of intriguing books is necessary to keep my ninth graders excited about the independent reading requirement of the course. I have several students who have read twelve novels since September, which is a wonderful accomplishment. Others have read half that, and need much encouragement to keep going. I cannot and will not give up on inspiring all of my students to read more. My challenge is to continue providing both the eager and the reluctant readers with titles they'll enjoy while guiding them towards more challenging books as they progress. Another challenge is to find high-interest books for the students who are reading at a low level. This proposal asks for a selection of young adult titles at all levels -- something for every reader in my heterogeneously-grouped classroom.
