Supporting Independence in Young Learners

Help me give my students the life skills tools, sensory supports, and structured visual environments they need to build independence, confidence, and success in and beyond our special education classroom.

My Project

Our goal is to create a supportive, structured learning environment for our K–3 Special Education students by integrating a structured teaching model, which emphasizes visual supports, structured teaching, and individualized instruction. This project will fund essential life skills materials, the development of a calming sensory room, and classroom tools that establish clear visual boundaries and predictable routines. These elements help our students better understand expectations, reduce anxiety, and increase their independence. By combining structured visuals, sensory regulation tools, and life skills instruction, we aim to build a classroom environment where every child can thrive, grow in confidence, and develop skills that support them both now and in the future.

This project supports creating the structured areas in our special education classroom that are necessary for student learning.

Below are the items we are requesting:

First, we need to create visual boundaries of each station in the classroom using room dividers. We will create visual schedules for each student using the requested clip boards and velcro. Visual timers will help students know when it's time to move our schedules.

Station 1: Independent Work

Items Needed:

Desk-top drawers

Busy-board/shoe tying board for life skills work

Adapted scissors

Jumbo crayons

Station 2: Calming Corner

Items Needed:

Climbing Toy

Sensory Toys/Tubes, Fidgets

Station 3: Whole Group

Items Needed:

Flexible seating cushions

Thank you for helping us to create structured support throughout our special education classroom. Your support will help us to foster independence in our students this coming school year and beyond.
