This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kindergarten class is abuzz with learning. My students' inquisitive minds are always wondering about what they see, curious about what we will learn next, conversing with classmates and teachers, and excited to start learning to read!

Almost all of my students are English Language Learners.

The majority receive free and reduced lunch. The families of my students are very kind and supportive and want to help their children succeed in school however they can. Many students did not attend preschool, making this year their first school experience. Some of my students favorite activities are reading-related, including visiting the library, hearing a read-aloud, reading with a "reading buddy" (beanie baby), and reading with a partner. They are so excited to finally be "big kids" and part of that is starting to learn to read!

My Project

Having individual book boxes will give each student a place to store and organize their books. Because each student comes in with varying skills and abilities and everyone learns at a different pace, it is necessary to differentiate the books the students read. They read their books that are right for them during independent reading, buddy reading, work stations, and when they finish an assignment early.

The reading skills we work on in kindergarten provide the children with the foundation they need to become strong, independent readers.

Book boxes will provide a way for each student to have books s/he needs, kept in an organized way. The book boxes will give the students something of their own, where they keep books that they can read and that they are interested in. It is a small but important step in developing their love of reading, which will foster a desire to become lifelong learners.
