Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The newest addition to our Hawthorne Academy are middle school kids. They are hungry for great books, and we want to encourage reading, for it serves as an important foundation for success in life! As the school was originally set up to serve kids pre-K through grade 3, we do not have the kinds of books that appeal to middle school kids.
In 2003, the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) began exploring the possibility of taking a lesson from the past and creating a thoroughly modern (no hyphen) educational experience through academies for pre-kindergarten to grade 6, 7 or 8 students. The planned approach was to provide a more caring learning environment for all – especially for the critical middle school-age youngsters. The results from the first academy garnered overwhelming support from parents and educators. Both national and SAISD research indicated that combining elementary and middle school-level grades at the same campus provides:
A greater sense of family and community.
Increased opportunities for students and parents to get to know teachers and the school support staff well, increasing a student’s likelihood of success.
A nurturing support system that helps prepare students to make a smooth transition to high school.
Since then, eight former elementaries and a middle school within the SAISD have adopted this innovative approach.
Providing great library books for our middle schoolers will help them engage in the world around them, and encourage development of the essential skill of reading.
Reading is a critical life skill, and you have before you the opportunity to provide materials that will show middle schoolers that reading is “wicked good.”
