My students need science based materials to master the new science standards which includes preserved animals for dissections, living animals, and many genetic items.
It is very hard to teach a student by 2D images of items. In a science classroom they need to feel, experience, and be involved in the curriculum to understand it.
My students are passionate about sciences.
They are college bound students who will continue to study science. Many of them will choose a career related to the science interests we expose them to during their high school experience. Our school is very diverse, but united as a whole. The students exhibit a lot of character education and are thankful for what their teaching staff does to provide and prepare them for the real world.
My Project
The materials requested are for hands-on based lessons and experiments. Students will witness the difference between vertebrate anatomy, and study the impact environment and genetics play on the success of an organism. The live materials will be used for self-produced experiments to illustrate their knowledge of the animal and the impact humans have caused to the species. In the end, the students will be more aware and passionate about animal preservation, and the impact an extinction has on an ecosystem. The plant material will be used to illustrate genetic outcome and variability found among species.
The materials will improve the hands-on experience of the students, but I also hope it will open their eyes and hearts to the destruction humans are causing species on earth.
I want students to realize they can make a difference. I am expecting them to determine ways to solve global issues related to life sciences, not just read about them. I hope to build their confidence and encourage them to pass their knowledge and compassion on.
