This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Science Olympiad is a program that seeks to encourage students of all backgrounds to get involved with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) subjects through competition and teamwork. At our school, I coach 3 teams of 15 students each. Some of the students on the team are the traditional "smart kids" but Science Olympiad has also been able to intrigue students who others might think would be "not good at science" into working hard and proving that STEM is for everyone.

My Science Olympiad students are some of the best teenagers you will ever meet.

They work hard every week studying and building and practicing for our tournaments. We compete 3 times a year at local high schools and universities who host the tournaments. At each tournament, my students compete in 23 different events that range in topics from Genetics to chemistry to building their own musical instrument or boomilever.

My Project

All of these materials go to support a specific event. Each of these events deepen their understanding in a high school science or expose them to an area of STEM that isn't normally experienced in the high schools.

The fossils kit is for our fossils event and will help the students be able to physically see and make distinctions between the types of fossils.

The Wright Stuff kit is all the materials my students will need to build airplanes made out of balsa wood and powered by rubber bands. It also includes a how-to guide so that students who are new to the event can learn.

The other materials will be used to build boomilevers and bottle rockets. The glue is one of the most important aspect for our boomilevers so that it is strong and yet lightweight. The ping pongs will be launched into the air by our bottle rockets with a parachute attached in our Ping Pong Parachute event.

The Circuit Lab kit will help provide the basic materials for my students to practice creating circuits and measuring voltage across multiple resistors.
