Support Students with Special Needs by Providing Hands-On Academic Activities

My Students

My classroom has some students diagnosed with severe cognitive disabilities. Most of my students are non-verbal and need significant support to communicate, develop academic skills, and learn life skills. Even though these wonderful students of mine struggle they remain happy, inquisitive, silly, and have a desire to learn.

During the COVID school closure, most of my students struggled and unfortunately lost much of what they had learned the previous year.

When in-person school resumed these students had difficulty adjusting to the classroom setting, learning a new schedule, and re-learning academic skills. Many of my students require sensory stimulation due to their disability. Coming back to school was difficult because they hadn't been able to get their sensory needs managed well.

My Project

These resources will give my students access to hands-on academic resources for math and language arts. Being able to handle and work with activities is necessary for my students. Providing multiple opportunities to demonstrate academic skills is vital for my students. The books selected will be adapted so that my non-verbal students can demonstrated their comprehension skills. Art supplies will be used for fine motor activities that will relate to the books and other academic lessons.

Being able to touch, move, and feel objects provides the sensory input needed by my students to learn and grow.
