Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are wonderful and curious individuals that truly value their education and seek to take responsibility for their learning. As a reading intervention teacher for students who qualify for special education services in Title I schools in South Los Angeles, I work with elementary children in 2nd through 5th grade. The majority of the students I support are English language learners from low socioeconomic communities with varying learning challenges that impacts their ability to read. My students spend 90 minutes a day receiving direct, structured and systematic instruction in phonics and phonological awareness that incorporates listening, reading, writing and speaking. They do their best to respond verbally to my prompts for over an hour and it often results in dry mouth!
Studies show that hydration promotes increased mental performance, reduces irritability and distractedness and helps students to retain and process information which leads to better learning outcomes.
I would like to offer fun colored reusable water bottles and culturally relevant decorative vinyl stickers as an incentive for students to earn while they learn rigorous reading invention strategies.
Having a bottle close by will greatly increase the frequency and capacity to drink water. By incentivizing the tools, I hope to motivate students to read and simultaneously teach the importance of staying hydrated, as doing so will help to create a productive and healthy environment conducive to growing learners.
