My Students

My class is comprised of a dynamic group of 5th graders. We come in all colors, shapes, and ability levels and appreciate one another for our differences. My school is a Title I school, and all of my students are on free or reduced price lunch.

Although my students don't come from an affluent background, they are rich in respect to love, tolerance, and happiness.

My students have grown so much from the first day they walked into my room. They are eager to learn and teach me a little more about life than I ever thought I could learn from a ten-year-old!

My Project

I am a teacher at a Title I school in Broward County, Florida. Per state mandate, we are required to have at least 30 minutes of organized recess daily. Due to the storm, our outdoor area was roped off with caution tape as a result of fallen trees. The trees that had not fallen were leaning, and, in turn, were deemed unsafe to remain on school property. Organized recces was forced to take place within the building due to the dangers of the outdoor landscaping. The students have grown very bored of Four Corners, Seven Up, and other games that can take place within a classroom. After several weeks of yellow caution tape warding students and faculty away from the potentially dangerous outdoors, the city has finally managed to cut down and remove all of our trees. We now have our open fields back. The new dilemma is that we do not have any outdoor or field equipment to facilitate the fun, high intensity, physical education routine that I would like to.

Our students need physical fitness and organized team sports.

Team sports allow students to learn to cooperate with one another for a common goal. Physical activity also allows my students to release all of their stored up energy outside so that they are ready to learn when they come inside. We need soccer balls, tennis racquets and net, cones, resistance bands and other outdoor equipment. The importance of daily physical activity cannot be emphasized enough. I am eager for my students to have the opportunity to explore the various sports that I still enjoy in my adult life.
