Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are emergent bilinguals who read, write, speak, sing, and dream in both Spanish and English. They approach life with wide-eyed, optimistic amazement, and are just as excited to engineer a bridge out of toothpicks and tape as they are to hunt down the week's phonics pattern

All of my students are immigrants or the children of immigrants, and they have limitless potential.

They also face linguistic, economic, and cultural challenges.

Our school works to harness students' curiosity by working in a workshop model, with daily opportunities for students to pursue their own inquiries, build on their existing skills, and connect their learning to their home culture.

My Project

This year we are working hard to incorporate daily discussions of math problems, explaining to one another how we solve tricky problems, deciding whether we agree with one another's reasoning, and explaining why or why-not. Right now, we don't have a place, like, say, an easily accessible whiteboard, to record that thinking during the discussion. We also don't have an easily accessible place to put anchor charts, the posters we use to remind us of newly learned concepts, while we are co-creating them in our meeting space. It's much easier to remember things like how to generate story ideas or what the difference is between even and odd numbers when you had a hand in writing and drawing the procedure!

This magnetic dry erase easel will make it much easier for me and my students to document our discussions in real time and co-construct visual representations of our learning.

It has a clip to hold up the pad of paper we use for the anchor charts. The magnetic quality will make it easy to display smaller items we want to discuss, like exemplary student work or our magnetic base-ten blocks. And, crucially, it has a dry-erase surface.

I chose this particular easel for its slim profile, adjustability, and reasonable price. I hope you can help us bring it to our classroom!
