Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Reader's Workshop is a special time in our room. The class and I enjoy a read aloud of a shared class novel. This experience lets students practice and improve their skills in reading, speaking and listening, critical thinking, and writing in a fun and challenging environment.
My students are a motivated and hardworking group of sixth graders.
They are the first graduating class of a dual language program in Los Angeles, learning in Spanish and English. They love to read and discuss what they have read in academic conversations and debates.
Our school has the challenges that many schools have. We lack the resources that our students need to reach their potential. While we have text books full of short stories, students need a real book they can read from cover to cover.
My students are a community of readers and thinkers that cannot wait to get their hands on their next novel.
My Project
My students will use these books as an anchor text of our reader's workshop. We will read the book together and the students will practice standards-based reading skills. Examples of skills are making a claim and supporting it with evidence, determining a theme, or comparing and contrasting texts. The students will engage in an oral discussion and then apply the skill in their own independent reading book. The students may also write about their reading or use the anchor text to inspire their own narratives and essays.
Reader's workshop is a daily routine in our classroom so students will use the books everyday.
Donations to this project will improve the classroom by allowing the students the materials they need for our community of literacy.
We have no other access to class sets of novels and the students need a range of text types. Donations to this project will change my students' lives by providing that shared reading experience that is so crucial in nurturing a life-long love of reading.
