My students need to Experience and Create Science with hands-on labs and creations: card stock for roller-coasters, solar system models, and sharks for dissection.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The bell rings and Ms. C greets her students at the door with a smile and a handshake. They recite our Classroom Creed, "Nothing in life is certain. But one thing I know for sure is that achievement and academic success are both obtainable. My number one priority is finding myself in education"...."
99% of the students receive free/reduced lunch benefits and come from minority backgrounds.
The creed goes on, "I have
the tools and resources to reach all of my goals, but I have to apply what I learn and I cannot do it alone." The truth is my students only have the tools and resources the teachers and school provide them with. JDD is located in a low income neighborhood. It takes about an hour every morning to get a smile on our students faces. Many of the students have been robbed of their innocence as a child. Their minds are consumed with adult problems and concerns. "Will they eat? Where will they sleep?" School is the only safe place for many of our students. The students deserve a chance to create new thoughts and experiences. No better place to start than Science Class!! Labs, hands-on models, and innovative technological designs will provide them with a positive educational experience which they deserve.
My Project
The students will learn all about motion and forces by building a 10 ft roller-coaster out of the colored card stock. The students will learn about homeostasis and body systems by dissecting a shark. The models of the solar system will enhance their ability to conceptualize the mind boggling details about outer space. Convection currents are a main topic in many different realms of science. The hands-on lab will provide a visual representation and fun approach to comprehend the redundant but difficult concept. The giant post-it notes will provide the students with a fun place to practice vocabulary! The butterfly world and Beta fish will be used to teach food webs, adaptations, and animal behavior.
All of these amazing resources will make the classroom more like an adventure and provide the children with exciting educational fun!
Many of my students are at a very low reading level so as a result their behavior can be an issue. I will be able to spark their interests and capture their attention with real scientific experiments, procedures, models, and dissections!
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
