Support Low-Income AP Statistics Students With Graphing Calculators
Help me give my students my AP Statistics students the graphing calculators needed for rigorous distance learning. They will be taking their AP Exams at home and many do not have access to the expensive graphing calculators needed.
I teach Advanced Placement Statistics at a large public high school in Michigan. Our school is the most diverse school in the state! We wear this title with great pride! We have over 60+ nations and languages represented in our halls. When my students leave our school, they know more about how to relate and work with people different from them than most adults.
Our AP Statistics program boasts the highest number of students on Free and Reduced Lunch who pass the AP exam in the state, and while we are so proud of this, it presents a challenge now that students are learning from home.
My students are incredibly driven and hard-working. But many of them simply lack access to the tools they need now that our school has closed for the remainder of the year. The students will still be taking their AP exam in May. Passing the exam is extremely important to many, not only because they have been working hard all year, but also because earning college credit can save them thousands of dollars.
My Project
On March 13, my high school closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic with no advanced notice. Many of my low-income students are now trying to prepare for their AP Statistics Exam and other STEM exams from home without the technology they need, namely expensive graphing calculators. This year, all AP exams will be taken at home. My students have been working extremely hard all year. They're incredible kids!
I want to make sure my students have everything they need in order to pass the exam and receive the college credit they deserve!
