My Project
Please help us provide 6 LEGO SPIKE Essential robotics kits for students in grades 1 to 3 at our public school in Philadelphia. With LEGO robotics, students learn how to creatively and collaboratively develop solutions with LEGO bricks, motors, sensors, and block-based code.
Our grades 1 to 3 students meet after school with college student volunteers from Penn Engineering, who guide them in lessons on computer science and engineering.
Americorps Digital Service Fellows and grades 4-5 students with robotics experience also act as mentors during our after school program. This means our students have lots of support and guidance as they solve problems and build things that are meaningful to them.
In addition, all students at our school, especially grades 1 to 3 students, will have access to the kits during our Digital Literacy classes. With our older (and discontinued) robotics kits, we have created spin art, plant and pollinator models, and rovers. The newer kits would allow students to work with sensors and more sophisticated block-based coding to create even more complex artifacts. Because I integrate robotics at each grade level, all students will have access to these kits.
Finally, students at our school engage in a "Genius Hour" during some of our digital literacy classes and other moments during the school day. Students would have access to these LEGO robotics kits to create and complete projects of their choosing.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
