Support Biliteracy For Our Dual Immersion Students

My students need entry level Spanish and bilingual Accelerated Reader books, such as "La oruga muy hambrienta," "Gorilita," and "Clifford," for our classroom library. This will help them be engaged and increase their reading levels.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Jimenez's classroom raised $696

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Un niño que lee sera un adulto que piensa"/ "A child who reads will be an adult who thinks". I have high expectations and dreams for my students, just as they do for themselves. This quote acknowledges that the key to reaching those dreams is reading, as it creates thinkers and leaders.

My first graders are learning in two languages through their participation in the Spanish and English Dual Immersion Program.

Located in the rural central coast, we are a high-poverty school with most of our students qualifying for free/reduced lunch. Homelessness, gang violence, and hunger are other obstacles interfering with my students' focus and learning. Many of our parents work in the fields in the local agriculture industry and some of our students are migrant students, having to move schools during the seasons. Despite all these odds, my students are enthusiastic and eager to learn. They feel proud of their heritage and maintaining their Spanish language.

My Project

Currently, my students don't have sufficient books in Spanish that are at their level and that qualify for the Accelerated Reader Program. Even though our school has the Dual Immersion program, the school library has a very limited selection of books for the pre-k and first grade reading levels. Students are beginning to be discouraged or turned off from reading since they keep seeing the same books. Unfortunately, my students are at a disadvantage since they lack access to reading materials, at their level, and in the language of instruction. By donating to this project, my students will be able look to our classroom library and find new and different books, in Spanish. These Spanish and bilingual reading materials will enable my students to participate in our new school-wide initiative and Accelerated Reader challenge.

A stronger reading foundation in their native language, will better enable my students to become biliterate.

These principles and foundations in reading will serve as the corner stone to not only fostering their interest and passion for reading, but for nurturing a hunger for self-driven learning.
