Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The school my students attend is labeled as Title 1 (low-income/high-poverty) and many of them receive free breakfast and lunch. Specifically, the students in my class are in First and Second grade, but also happen to be on the Autism Spectrum ranging from verbal to nonverbal and low-functioning to high-functioning. They are member of my classroom due to challenging communication, behaviors, social skills, and academic performance.

My students are lagging the skills to appropriate respond to environmental situations on a daily basis.

Not only do these students require intensive interventions in socials skills, appropriate behaviors, and self-regulation strategies, they also require intensive academic instruction. Many of them are working on functional academics and greatly benefit from hands on learning and lot of visuals. The ultimate goal for my students is to see them effectively use individualized interventions, sensory strategies, and communication support to become successful members of the community.

My Project

Students in my class thrive with hands-on materials for learning. They have a very difficult time with many of the STEM activities that our school currently provides. Many of the activities are for older students, involve hard fine-motor work, or do not interest my students. The Fairy Tale Problem Solving Stem Lab sets are perfect for my students. They are familiar with the stories and the fine motor work is as their developmental level.

A big challenge for my students is being able to complete tasks independently.

The Drill Kit and Magnetic Designer will help my students with their visual tracking, following directions, and fine motor skills. These two activities help stimulate their sensory needs to help engage them in order to complete a task independently.

My students are also starting to learn about time and money. It is a very hard concept for them to understand without hands-on materials. The cash register will help them learn functional skills of spending money, while the learning clock will help them become independent in telling time.

Finally, my students have a very difficult time focusing. They are constantly distracted with light, noise, smell, temperature, etc. These noise reduction headphones will help my students tremendously in being able to block out disturbances and focus on their activities. My students will also be able to use the headphones whenever they feel necessary in order to participate.
